Earlier today, we wrote to the more than 1,200 members of our Cause on Facebook regarding the results of the recently-completed clinical trial of an HIV vaccine in Thailand. Below, we are reposting it for you. We’d love to hear your thoughts on the news.

Exciting Vaccine Development, and Keeping HIV on the Radar
I’m writing to you with exciting news: today, results of a large-scale clinical trial–conducted in Thailand by the Thai Ministry of Public Health, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the US Army, Sanofi-Pasteur, and Global Solutions for Infectious Diseases–showed signs of its efficacy in preventing HIV infection. While the results are far from conclusive, and do not indicate that an HIV vaccine is at hand, they are extremely positive and shed light on new research that needs to be done.
The vaccine trial, conducted with more than 16,000 Thai volunteers, tested two vaccine parts–two parts that had previously been deemed ineffective when used independently. This trial used both parts, with the greatest success yet seen in a clinical trial of an HIV vaccine.
It’s important to note that however exciting this news is–and it is VERY exciting–it is not a sign that we are finished with HIV/AIDS. I want to emphasize that these results are just the first step in many, many more trials that must be conducted, both to increase the effectiveness of the vaccine candidates, as well as to confirm their safety for use. These trials are costly and rely on the generous support of both government and private donations–donations made to Until There’s A Cure, and countless other HIV/AIDS organizations.
The funds that Until There’s A Cure raises, through donations and sales of The Bracelet, go directly to making these sorts of scientific advances possible, each and every day. By purchasing and wearing The Bracelet, you are making a tangible contribution to finding a cure for HIV/AIDS — and you are making your voice heard in support of this life-saving research. “HIV” is actually a trending topic on Twitter today due to this news story — we’ve got to keep the public informed and passionate about a vaccine for HIV and a cure for AIDS. Each member of our Facebook Cause, fan of our Page, reader of our blog, and subscriber to our newsletter is helping to place HIV/AIDS at the forefront of public attention.
We need to keep this level of attention focused on Vaccine Advocacy, Care & Services, and Prevention Education. Exciting developments like today’s don’t come along every week, but awareness and support for all aspects of HIV and AIDS are everyday necessities.
Finally, I want to congratulate Global Solutions for Infectious Diseases, recipient of an Until There’s A Cure grant in a previous year. We invite you to learn more about this exciting news and read the GSID press release.
Thanks so much for your support, and for your ongoing commitment to the Cause… Until There’s A Cure
